50 meters of environmental evaluation
Here we will be showing you the step-by-step explanation of 50 meters of environmental evaluation.
The testing equipment that will be used are your representative sampling map, Camera, Handheld GPS, Compass, 50 m tape measure, half meter square made of pipe or wood, 2 m measuring stick with a marker at 1 m, girth tape and or tape measure, tree height measuring sticks or other tree height measuring equipment, tent peg, Clipboard with paper or printable data sheet or Tablet and string, and a good knowledge of local flora and fauna would be a great advantage. Minimum two-person job.
What we want to do here is simple, all we need to do is:
Identify a 50 meters of environmental evaluation sample location from your map and position yourself at that location, record on your paper or printable data sheet in this order the longitude, latitude, day, month, year, and the map sample location number, then photograph your handheld GPS with location visible on screen and of any identifiable landmarks.
- Push tent peg into ground and tie the end of the tape measure to it.
- Walk in a straight as possible line laying the tape behind unreeling the 50 m tape.
- At the end of the tape take photos north, south, east, west, and of your GPS location, and of any identifying landmarks.
- Starting from zero every 10 m all the way to the other end of the tape, take photos facing north, south, east, west, and of your GPS location and of any easily recognized landmarks from each GPS location and up and down the tape measure.
- Starting from zero, every 10 m all the way to the other end of the tape, place evaluation square on the ground to the left or right of the tape measure, take photo of square on the ground, count all grass, seedlings, and other plants below 50 cm tall inside the square and record the number of plants, then estimate the bare ground percentage to the best of your ability, and record this information.
- Use the 2m measuring stick to evaluate how many plants are within 1 m either side of your tape measure, by putting the marker in the middle of your stick on the tape and slowly moving along counting all plants over 50 cm until you reach the other end of the tape.
- By the time you reach the other end of your tape you should have evaluated approximately 100 m² of ground and have a total for, all plants from 50cm to 2 m, and between 2 m and 5 m, and 5 m and over.
- For all trees over 50 cm tall you will have a number, for example tree 1,2,3 etc…
- You will have recorded the girth measurement and height. Collect girth measurements from trees over 2 m by wrapping the tape measure around the tree or plant at approximately chest height.
- Repeat the process at all “50 meters of environmental evaluation” representative sample map locations.
In the forest the “50 m environmental evaluation” might not be a straight line through the forest. So, your goal should be to create as straight a line as practical
On the evaluation day the last thing you must do is to take a selfie of the person or people doing the job, this needs to be uploaded with all the other photos.
Next, the GC-landowner or GC-worker will need to log the information about plant numbers, ground cover, heights, and photos you have collected along with your GPS information, on to our webpage.
These photos and other information are to be used to validate the GC-landowners and GC-workers claim for Global Climate Dollars.
Congratulations this is the end of 50 meters of environmental evaluation.
Thank you for helping to save our planet.
